PROGRAMME NOTES

Schubert in Blue

Schubert in Blue is an arrangement of the three Shakespeare settings which Schubert made in July 1826, here in the order D888, D891 & D889, designed as an unusual tribute on the 150th anniversary of the composer’s death. ‘Come thou monarch of the vine’ is close to early Presley; ‘Who is Sylvia’ relates to Ellington blues; and ‘Hark, hark the lark’ swings the tune over a kind of Jelly Roll Morton stomp. Schubert in Blue was written for Meriel Dickinson and Christine Crowshaw who gave the first performance at the Wigmore Hall on 19 February 1978.
